About Understand the Machine

Our Mission

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work, learn, communicate, and make decisions. But most of the conversation about AI happens in technical circles, behind paywalls, or in sensationalized headlines. That leaves most people out.

Understand the Machine exists to close that gap. We create free, plain-language educational resources that help everyday people understand AI — what it is, how it works, how it affects their lives, and what they can do about it. No tech background needed. No strings attached.

What We Do

  • Write free guides explaining AI concepts in simple, everyday language
  • Create downloadable PDF resources for individuals, teachers, and families
  • Publish a weekly newsletter breaking down AI news without jargon
  • Build interactive tools — quizzes, checklists, and comparisons — to make learning hands-on

Why This Matters

AI is not just a technology story — it's a literacy issue. When people don't understand the tools that shape their news feeds, job prospects, healthcare, and children's education, they can't make informed choices. We believe everyone deserves to understand the technology that influences their daily life, regardless of their education level or income.

Our Approach

We follow three simple principles:

  1. Plain language. We write at an 8th-grade reading level. If a concept needs jargon, we define it first.
  2. Honest framing. No hype, no fearmongering. AI is a tool — powerful but imperfect. We present both the benefits and the risks.
  3. Free forever. Every guide, every PDF, every newsletter — free. AI literacy shouldn't be a luxury.

Support Our Work

Understand the Machine is an independent nonprofit. We don't run ads, sell data, or accept sponsorships that could bias our content. Our work is funded entirely by individual donations and grants.

If you find our guides helpful, consider supporting us so we can keep creating free AI education for everyone. Every contribution — no matter the size — helps us reach more people.
